It's a question I receive often. If I'm using minky as my backing, do I need batting? I've always automatically answered yes, mostly because I know how slippery minky is on the inside. If you've ready my other blog post on using minky as the backing, you'll know that minky is a polyester fabric with plush on one side. The other side is smooth and slippery. It's lovely and soft and all I use for my backings on my personal quilts.
But, I've never ACTUALLY tried quilting a quilt with minky and no batting. So in the quest for science and knowledge, I decided to try it out.
This quilt was one I picked up at the free table at my guild in New Mexico, along with some pink minky from the same free table.
Starting out, I already don't love how it's going:
And here's when I'm thinking I ruining this quilt:
It was so terrible, y'all. The quilt top moved all over the place, with gathers and tucks, creating bubbles instead of beautiful quilting. Instead of finishing the whole quilt, I trimmed it off and quilted the rest of the quilt with batting.
Same quilt, same design, same size, same thread. So much better!
Here are the two side by side, the quilt with no batting is on the left, and with batting on the right.
I can't believe how different it looks with batting, and I'm so glad I tried this so I can say confidently, always use batting with minky!
